About HardDiskIndex
In short: HardDiskIndex ranks eBay listings for hard drives and SSDs by what a terabyte costs, cheapest first. One person runs it, and affiliate commission from eBay pays for it without ever changing the order.
Who runs it
HardDiskIndex, guides included, is written and run by one person based in Portugal. There is no company and no team behind it, which is worth knowing when you weigh what you read here.
Prices come straight from eBay
Every listing on HardDiskIndex is a real eBay listing, fetched through eBay's own API and shown with delivery included wherever eBay states it. Nothing is entered by hand and nothing is estimated.
Prices move constantly, so the note above each table says how far behind eBay the figures on that page are. The live price is always the one on eBay.
Commission pays for it, and never sets the order
Links to eBay are affiliate links: if you buy something after following one, HardDiskIndex may earn a commission from eBay at no extra cost to you. That is its only income. Nobody pays to appear here or to rank higher.
The ranking is arithmetic and nothing else, as the methodology page describes. The listing that is cheapest per terabyte is at the top because it is the cheapest per terabyte.
Treat the figures as a starting point
This is the part most price comparisons leave out: the figures here are worth less than they look.
- Capacity, interface, form factor and recording technology are read from the seller's own title, and sellers make mistakes.
- Auctions are ranked on their current bid. That is a real price now, not the price the drive will sell at.
- HardDiskIndex cannot see a drive's condition, its power-on hours or whether it was pulled from a failed array.
Read the listing before you buy. The ranking is a way of finding candidates, not a verdict on them.
Getting in touch
Write to info@harddisk-index.net. Corrections are welcome: if a drive is listed with the wrong capacity, interface or recording technology, say which listing and it will be fixed at the source rather than by hand.
